A brush fire burned 1 acre amid strong winds in Kihei on Tuesday afternoon, with leeward areas of all Hawaiian islands under a red flag advisory.
The fire was reported at 12:11 p.m. on South Kihei Road at the Walaka Street intersection, according to the Maui Fire Department. Crews arrived on scene to find a working brush fire in an empty lot and were able to quickly knock down the flames. The fire was 100 percent contained at 1 p.m. and extinguished at 1:37 p.m. after burning about 1 acre of brush.
Responding units included Engine 6 from Kihei, Engine 14 and Tanker 14 from Wailea as well as Relief Engine 10 and Relief Tanker 10 from Kahului.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damages or injuries were reported.
The fire broke out during a red flag warning and wind advisory. MFD reported strong trade winds of 20 to 30 mph at the time of the fire. High winds also stoked a 35-acre brush fire on Monday along Maui Veterans Highway that MFD said was 100 percent contained as of 1:19 p.m. Tuesday.
